Tips to Keep all Pets Comfy in Winter

Tips to Keep all Pets Comfy in Winter

With winter in full swing, your pets are likely feeling the chill. All animals are affected by the drop in temperature so be sure to take special care to keep them comfortable during the cold months. Find tips below to help different pets cope in different ways.

Dogs

If your dogs spend most of their time indoors, they’ll be happy with a comfy dog bed and warm blankets to cuddle up with all winter. The Queen Pet Shop has a brand new range of high quality blankets in beautiful colours. Visit any of our branches to treat your fur baby to a new blanket – find your nearest store here.

If your dogs are outdoors for most of the day, make sure they have adequate shelter including a kennel furnished with bedding and blankets to help block out the wind. Small dogs and those without thick fur may benefit from a jacket for walks and time spent outdoors. Use this post as a guide to help you measure your dog for a jacket from The Queen Pet Shop.

Cats

Your cats will enjoy the enclosed shelter of a cat cave, especially in rooms with a draught. Put their beds in sunny areas of the house near closed windows, so they can soak up the afternoon sunlight.

During winter, cats eat around 15% more in order to help regulate their body temperature. Consider upping the quantity of food you offer during winter if your cat’s bowl seems to be emptying faster than usual. Find out how a wet food diet could be beneficial for your cat here.

Birds

Birds can also be sensitive to the colder months, so be sure to prepare their living area for a comfortable winter to prevent illness. Your bird’s cage should be kept out of draughty areas and a cage cover should be used at night to keep the warmth in.

In Gauteng, dry winters can affect your bird’s skin and feathers. Consider using a humidifier in the room where your bird lives and give them plenty of access to fresh water to avoid dehydration.

Reptiles

Pay special attention to your cold-blooded pets in winter. Make sure their basking spot lamps, heat mats and thermometers are in working order and replace bulbs as soon as necessary.

The Queen Pet Shop offers a wide range of equipment to provide a comfortable environment for your reptiles.  See the range here and visit us in store for advice on how to keep your reptiles safe and happy throughout the year.

All pets could use some extra treats in winter, so visit any of our stores to stock up on snacks for fur babies, feathered friends and reptiles. Stay warm all winter and keep your pets happy too!
